Mirena IUD Can Cause False Brain Tumor Symptoms

The Mirena IUD is a popular form of birth control because it is long-lasting and reversible. Unfortunately, it may cause more harm than good. The Mirena IUD has been linked to a condition called Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC), which can lead to severe headaches and vision problems. That’s why women across the country are currently filing Mirena PTC Lawsuits to get the compensation they deserve.

Mirena IUD Concerns

The Mirena IUD is designed to be a long-lasting (up to 5 years) contraceptive. It works by releasing a synthetic hormone, called levonorgestrel, into a woman’s body via the uterus. Before Mirena’s release in 2000, there was very little known about the effects of levonorgestrel on the body. In fact, doctors still recommend that first-time mothers not have the device implanted. Recently, there have been additional concerns over Mirena’s link to a condition called Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC).

Mirena’s Link to Pseudotumor Cerebri

It is thought that levonorgestrel causes an increase of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull, placing pressure on the brain and optic nerve. This pressure mimics a brain tumor. Many patients have reported that they experienced negative symptoms quickly after having Mirena implanted. These symptoms usually include headaches, migraines, and vision problems. The most common symptoms of Mirena-induced PTC include:

  • Dull headaches that progress to painful migraines
  • Blurry vision or double vision
  • Episodes of temporary blindness and blackouts

If you experience any of these symptoms while using the Mirena IUD, it is important that you get medical attention as soon as possible. If left untreated, PTC can lead to permanent blindness.

Mirena PTC Lawsuits

Did you know that Mirena’s warning label does NOT include any information about the risk of PTC? Because of this, many women have suffered from painful headaches, and temporary or permanent vision problems. There are currently 9 women who have filed Mirena PTC lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals citing false brain tumor symptoms, but there are sure to be more.
