What is Actemra?
Actemra is the brand name version of Tocilizumab and is commonly used to treat adults with rheumatoid arthritis, which causes pain, swelling and stiffness of the joints and other parts of the body. Just recently, the Food and Drug Administration expanded the approved use of Actemra to treat adults with giant cell arteritis, the first FDA approved prescription drug specific to the disorder. Actemra was developed by a U.S. biotechnology giant called Genentech, a subsidiary of Roche Pharmaceuticals, and has been on the U.S. market since 2010. More than 760,000 people have been prescribed Actemra, generating billions of dollars in revenue.
Dangers of Actemra
Newly released studies show that users of Actemra are suffering from serious, sometimes deadly side effects. Those side effects include:
- Heart Attacks
- Heart Failure
- Heart Palpitations
- Liver Failure
- Cognitive Side Effects Including Memory Lapses
Furthermore, studies show Actemra patients have a higher risk of suffering from one or more of these conditions than users of other rheumatoid arthritis drugs, including Humira and Remicade. While most rheumatoid arthritis medications place warnings of these risks on the labels, Actemra does not. In fact, since the drug’s approval, the manufacturers of Actemra fought the FDA over a recommendation to expand its warning label after the agency had received several concerns about the drug’s safety.
Do I Have a Actemra Lawsuit?
The Food and Drug Administration knows of at least 1,100 people who have died after taking Actemra, and that does not account for the potentially tens of thousands who have suffered serious, adverse effects from taking the drug. Users of Actemra and their doctors are being misled into believing it might be safer than other rheumatoid arthritis drugs because serious problems that are being frequently reported are not documented on its warning label.
